NEW POSITION from February 2014

From February 2014 I will be a post-doctorial researcher at the Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena’s Institute of Sociology. I will work with Prof. Hartmut Rosa (co-editor of Time&Society and known amongst others for his enagagement with Charles Taylor and his profound theory of social acceleration). Rosa is a a current and leading proponent of critical social theory informed by the Frankfurt School theory tradition, the institute in Jena is a new gathering point for critical theory in the German-speaking countries, so I am very happy and proud to work in Jena.

A very interesting volume that presents Jena’s critical sociology is the book “Soziologie – Kapitalismus – Kritik: Eine Debatte” (Sociology – Capitalism – Critique: A debate) published in German with Suhrkamp (http://www.suhrkamp.de/buecher/soziologie_-_kapitalismus_-_kritik-klaus_doerre_29523.html)

A good Interview (in German) with Hartmut Rosa can be found here: http://audio.radio-frei.de/podcast/2013%2011%2012%20Interview%20Hartmut%20Rosa%20entschleunigt%20-%20podcast.mp3

And a talk by Rosa about accelleration can be found (in English) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Vtx32gXO0c

new publication: Facebook vs. Diaspra: A Critical Study

Sevignani, Sebastian. 2013.  Facebook Vs. Diaspora: A Critical Study. In Unlike Us Reader: Social Media Monopolies and Their Alternatives, edited by Geert Lovink and Miriam Rasch (pp. 323-337). Amsterdam: Institute of Network Culltures.

The Unlike Us Reader offers a critical examination of social media, bringing together theoretical essays, personal discussions, and artistic manifestos. How can we understand the social media we use everyday, or consciously choose not to use? We know very well that monopolies control social media, but what are the alternatives? While Facebook continues to increase its user population and combines loose privacy restrictions with control over data, many researchers, programmers, and activists turn towards designing a decentralized future. Through understanding the big networks from within, be it by philosophy or art, new perspectives emerge.
